The Grade 7 Health course includes subject matter that deals primarily and explicitly with human sexuality. Instruction will be provided through reading materials and written assignments in the online course.
All topics are from the Alberta Program of Studies and are:
- Science-based and free of bias
- Inclusive of personal, family, and social values
- Respectful of individual differences, self-worth, and dignity
- Provided in a supportive environment for students to learn and ask questions
The subject matter is contained in the following areas:
W-7.3 Examine the human reproductive process, and recognize misunderstandings associated with sexual development
W-7.12 Identify the effects of social influences on sexuality and gender roles and equity; e.g., media, culture
W-7.13 Examine the influences on personal decision making for responsible sexual behaviour
W-7.14 Examine abstinence and decisions to postpone sexual activity as healthy choices
Pursuant to section 11.1(2) of the Alberta Human Rights Act, a parent/guardian may request that their child be exempted from the above-identified instruction, or be exempted from a specific component of the course, without academic penalty. If your child is exempted, they will not be required to read or complete the human sexuality unit, and will receive no academic penalty. There will be no alternate readings or assignment required.
In order to exercise this option, you must send a signed copy of the following Student Exemption Request letter to the instructor declaring your intentions. If this letter is not received by February 2, 2016, the instructor will expect the student to complete the human sexuality unit as outlined in the course.
