History of Western Music – Music 20

This module focuses on the relationship between music history and Western history. By understanding the similarities and differences between the musical communities of the past and those of the present, students develop a better understanding of their own musical heritage.

To complete this module, you need to complete three tasks: Baroque Music, Classical Music, and Romantic Music.

How to find recordings of music

Most classical music can easily be found online because much of it is now public domain. Many websites contain links to free professional and amateur recordings made by the modern performers. YouTube and other video sharing sites are also an excellent resource. If online recordings are not an option, most public libraries have a CD borrowing area.

Baroque Music

1. Define the following musical terms:

  • Concerto -
  • Oratorio -
  • Cantata -
  • Opera -
  • Fugue -

2. Research “Baroque Music.” Write a paragraph that explains the overall style and aesthetic of music at this time. If you used a website or book, please include the title or website address.

3. Find a recording of a piece of music by Johann Sebastian Bach or George Frideric Handel. Write a paragraph response that answers the following questions. Also include where you found the recording.

  • What is the title of the piece? When was the piece written (approximately)?
  • What type of composition is it? (concerto, opera, etc.)
  • What instruments or voices are performing?
  • How are the elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, texture, dynamics, style) expressed in this piece?
  • What makes this piece representative of music in the Baroque Era?

Classical Music

1. Define the following musical terms:

  • Sonata-Allegro Form -
  • Theme and Variations -
  • Rondo -
  • Minuet and Trio -

2. Research “Classical Music.” Write a paragraph that explains the overall style and aesthetic of music at this time. If you used a website or book, please include the title or website address. Be careful – Some websites us the term “classical music” for any old style of Western music from any era. Make sure you are truly reading information specifically about the classical era.

3. Find a recording of a piece of music by Franz Joseph Haydn or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Write a paragraph response that answers the following questions. Also include where you found the recording.

  • What is the title of the piece? When was the piece written (approximately)?
  • What type of composition is it? (concerto, opera, etc.)
  • What instruments or voices are performing?
  • How are the elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, texture, dynamics, style) expressed in this piece?
  • What makes this piece representative of music in the Classical Era?

Romantic Music

1. Define the following musical terms:

2. Research “Romantic Music.” Write a paragraph that explains the overall style and aesthetic of music at this time. If you used a website or book, please include the title or website address. Be careful – Some websites us the term “romantic music” for any style of music with a romantic or loving mood. Make sure you are truly reading information specifically about the romantic era.

3. Find a recording of a piece of music by Hector Berlioz or Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Write a paragraph response that answers the following questions. Also include where you found the recording.

  • What is the title of the piece? When was the piece written (approximately)?
  • What type of composition is it? (concerto, opera, etc.)
  • What instruments or voices are performing?
  • How are the elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, texture, dynamics, style) expressed in this piece?
