Exercise 3.1: Quadrant Sampling
1. If you wanted to do a study to find out what kind and how many insects lived directly under a flat rock with a 30 cm diameter in your garden, what study methods would you employ? Explain the technique you would use to carry out your experiment.
2. In the early weeks of May, before you have planted your vegetable garden, your parents ask you to pull all the weeds from the garden to earn your weeks allowance. They offer to pay you 5¢ for every weed you pull, but they require an estimate as to what this job will cost them. You do a Quadrant sample of a square meter of the garden and find that there were 153 weeds in your sampled area. If the total garden is 20 square metres, how much money will you estimate you can earn if you pull all the weeds? Show your work for full marks.
3. The line transect method is best used to sample what type of organisms?
