Exercise 4.1: Disaster Proof Housing
Climate change is changing the way that we protect ourselves against natural disasters. Tornados, hurricanes, wildfires and tsunami are becoming stronger and more frequent. They are more difficult to predict and are happening in areas that are not accustomed to dealing with them. Designers and architects are working together to create housing that can survive these extreme conditions.
This is a house that is built to resist hurricanes and flooding. What design features does it have to help it survive under the extreme stress caused by a hurricane?
This house is built to resist earthquakes. What design features does it have to help it survive under the extreme stress caused by an earthquake?
Create a design for a house that will resist a natural disaster: flood, earthquake, fire, tornado, etc. Incorporate at least 5 special features that will keep the house and people inside safe during the disaster. Explain how each feature works. Draw the design of the house on paper and scan/take a picture of your work or create your drawing using a digital drawing or 3D modelling program.
