How to Make a Recording
To complete some assignments in this Junior High Music course, you need to submit a recording of yourself singing or playing your instrument for your music teacher to see and evaluate. If your file can't be opened by your music teacher or if the recording is of poor quality, your teacher will not be able to view it and give you timely feedback. It is important that you follow these instructions and ensure your recording is accessible and of good quality.

For this course, video recordings are preferred. It ensures academic honesty, and allows your music teacher to assess your posture, positioning, expression, bowing technique, etc. If you are not able to make a video recording, you may be able to come and perform live for your teacher at their office. Please email or call to make arrangements. If performing live or by video is not possible at all, an audio recording may be accepted, but please check with your teacher before submitting a recording that is audio only.
You can make a recording using any electronic device available to you: video camera, digital camera, webcam, smart phone, tablet, etc. Even the camera on a laptop can create a good recording if you position it properly. You must be able to download the video onto your computer so you can submit the file in this online course. On some devices, you need to remove a memory card or USB stick and insert it into your computer. On other devices, you can email the file or send it by Bluetooth or wirelessly. However, some devices require multiple steps and you may need to check the user manual or instructions that came with your device. If you do not know how to get the file onto your computer, contact your music teacher or technical support. The good news is that once you know how to do it, the file transfer process is usually the same every time you do it.
Once your file has been loaded onto your computer, you need to make sure that it is in a format that can be opened by your music teacher. Look at the name of your file and check its file extension. The file extension is the ending of a file name on your computer after the dot. For example, a file the can be opened in Microsoft Office could be called sample.doc or a picture file could be called image.jpg.
Common acceptable video file extensions: .3gp, .aif, .avi, .mov, .mp4, .mpg, .wmv
If your file has one of the above extensions, your teacher will likely be able to open it. However, there may be problems with the file conversion and information may be distorted or lost. A good idea would be to send your teacher a short test video at the beginning of the school year to ensure they can open it. Then you will be sure that they will be able to open your file when it is time to hand in your actual music assignment.
Submitting your Recording
Your music teacher prefers to keep all their files organized in one place: in this online course. In the course, they can keep all the student files organized and ensure nothing gets lost or misplaced. Sometimes your teacher might receive up to 50 (or more!) emails a day, and if you send your file or link via email, it is possible that it may be misplaced or lost in the mix. Keeping all your work in the online course also helps you stay organized too. Please submit your file (or link) in the assignment link on the online music course!
To submit your file, you have a few different options:
1. Attach the file to your assignment submission
- When you submit your assignment, you can attach the file by either dragging and dropping the file into the "File Submission" box, or by clicking the "Add..." button to find and open the file from your computer. If your video file is large, however, this option may not work for you.
2. Upload the file to Google Drive
- If your file is too large to attach to your assignment, you can upload it to your Google Drive. Once the file is uploaded, ensure you have shared it with your music teacher (search for their name). Then, you will need to create a shareable link. Post that link in the "Online Text" box in the assignment so your teacher can click the link to view your video file.
3. Upload the file to an online file hosting service, like Dropbox
- If you are not able to upload your file to Google Drive, you may be able to use an online file hosting service. Dropbox works just like Google Drive. It allows you to store files from your computer to a secure online server for someone else to access online. You will need a parent's permission to create a free account. To share the file with your teacher, find the file access link and post that in the "Online Text" box in the assignment.
4. Create a private YouTube account
- If your video can not be uploaded any other way, you can create a YouTube account and post your video there. You will need a parent's permission to create a free account. Please ensure your YouTube account is set to the highest possible privacy settings so your video can only be seen by your teacher or anyone that you share the video link with. To share the file with your teacher, post the video link in the "Online Text" box in the assignment.
